Testing the settings

Sometimes when you are used to doing things one way, you have a tendency to try and do everything that way. For example, this site has a template that I use and have created in Dreamweaver. It uses ASP and for some reason after recreating the template in the blogger format, I can only get the first page to load. The other pages seem to have been written properly but they just don't load up.

So now I'm writing a second post just to try and test the settings. Sometimes when working with a database in Dreamweaver, you need to add a few records for it to work properly. Now I'm sure this is not the case but I just have to try it anyways. I wonder if this is common when posting to your own site.

Well I'll soon find out...

Well it's definately my template desgin that is the problem. I will either have to go back and redesign it to use frames (which I hate but more on that another day) or simply create a more simple version of my existing Dreamweaver template and strip out the ASP and the tracking application. I would hate to do it but it looks like I gonna have to try it like this for a while.

My apologies for anyone who had need trying to post.

I think I have sorted it out, or at least discover what the initial problem was:

After switching back to a standard format while keeping the .asp tag, I republished the blog and everything worked fine.

Next I adding the include file tags for the database connections and the tracking app. This is when the whole thing fell over again. So after reading many help pages on the blogger site I discovered that blogger doesn't like < ! -- Include file = but it would rather you use < ! -- include virtual = . I can sort of under stand how this would make a difference but it just seemed so weird and the pages are actually being hosted on my site so a virtual include seems bizarre. But it works so back to rebuilding the Planete Fortier Template and getting this thing working again.

On a side bar, this is first time I haven't gone straight to Google Groups top find the answer. I know this doesn't have much weight as this blog is so new, but this should be a huge compliment to the folks at Blogger. I have been troubleshooting program errors for a long time and after being subjected to so many terrible help files, my first port of call is now Google Groups. If you have ever used Google Groups, you'll know exactly what I am talking about.
